Coaching

What is coaching?

Coaching is a powerful alliance that can help you determine your priorities, make choices, take action and supports you in attaining your personal and professional goals. It’s about who you are, what matters most to you and how to achieve what you want. The coach serves as a facilitator, assisting in overcoming limiting beliefs and helping you become more accountable.

What can I expect from coaching?

Get clear on what you really want. Set attainable goals and develop a strategy for achieving them. Practice being focused. Receive support, create momentum and become more accountable. Reduce stress.

How does appointment scheduling work?

You purchase 2 hours (120 minutes) at a time. You can split up your time however you like: four 30-minute sessions, six 20-minute sessions, one one-hour session and four 15-minute sessions or any other combination. We can set up any frequency you like: weekly, bi-weekly, or more or less often. We talk by phone to compare schedules/calendars and book all 120 minutes in one call. This “appointment setup call” does not take any of your coaching minutes away. This is complimentary.

What is a typical coaching session like?

The client sets the agenda. The coach and client may choose to look at what’s working well, what isn’t, what can be done differently in the future, what lessons were learned in “mistakes”, brainstorm on options, or identify reoccurring themes. It is the coach’s responsibility to listen with the head and the heart, and the client’s responsibility to be honest and take responsibility. Confidentiality is assured during the entire coaching process.

How much does coaching cost?

The initial 20-minute trial session is free. My individual rate is $250 for two hours. My corporate rate is $300 for two hours. Each client sets up a program that works for both the client and the coach. Payment is due prior to the first session. For some clients, setting a goal at the beginning of coaching and seeing progress around that goal, can help reveal the value of your investment. A minimum commitment of three months is recommended, but not required.

How does coaching differ from therapy?

Therapy is frequently about the past and coaching is about the present and future. The coaching process focuses on choice, planning, growth and support, and the coach helps guide the client. Coaching sessions can involve emotional issues and your coach should be able to support you when you share strong feelings. If a coach feels that the client would benefit from therapy, the coach should recommend that as an alternate or additional avenue to pursue.

What training do coaches receive?

Training varies widely among coaches. Right now, a person can simply call themselves a “coach” with no formal training. Other coaches receive training in person, and still others (the vast majority) do training over the phone. There are about a dozen schools offering coach training. Feel free to ask your coach about training they have received.

What are the qualities of a good coach-client relationship?

The coaching relationship is based on mutual trust, respect, honesty, responsibility, accountability, creativity and commitment. Your coach should have a demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles, think creatively, hold your best interests in mind, successfully have adopted new behaviors and achieved increasing levels of personal and professional growth. A good coach will also exhibit excellent listening skills, and can help the client hear what s/he is saying.
